Menopause Options - There Are Many

Every woman will go through the life changing menopause. Each woman is unique, which means each menopause that is experienced differs. Some woman travel through this stage of her life without any problems while others suffer from a very difficult time, which can affect their life and the lives of those closest to them.

Thankfully today there is lot of help out there for those women of a certain age, and any woman experiencing problems should reach out for help and explore the different options on offer.

Some women use herbs to help combat the unpleasant symptoms, other choose to use Hormone Replacement treatment (HRT). The Herbal route can offer fewer side effects than medical drugs, which make them popular.

The menopause can take years to complete and is heralding a new stage of the woman's life. Once it is known that menopause has started it is important to take control. A nutritious diet is important as too is exercise.

It is quite possible to combine both conventional hormone replacement treatment and alternative therapies. The important thing is to become educated and to make choices that suit you.

During the menopause the ovaries stop making estrogen and progesterone. As part of the menstrual cycle the ovaries also make androgens and testosterone. So with the hormone levels changing many ladies need help in replacing them. This is where Hormone Replacement Treatment comes in. HRT can relieve the unpleasant symptoms sometimes suffered, for example hotflashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness and loss of libido and can give protection against osteoporosis, heart disease and stroke but on the down side HRT does present some risks which should be discussed with your physician.

HRT can be very useful for those women who have a surgical pause where the ovaries and usually her uterus and fallopian tubes are removed. When this is done there is a much more sudden drop in sex hormone levels than when the menopause takes its natural course. This sudden drop can cause many health problems especially in younger women.

Some women choose to use herbal treatments to help them through the difficult times. If this route is chosen than a physician should still be consulted as some herbal products can have side effects and may react with other prescribed medication.

It is also believed that Soy and soy products can help with the symptoms of menopause but there is some controversy over this.

During the menopause stage of life it has been found that regular exercise offers huge benefits in aiding with the discomfort of symptoms. I am not talking about a punishing routine but gentle exercising that aids with mobility and relaxation. Just by choosing to use the stairs and not the elevator is a start. Practicing yoga stretches is also a good way of exercising.

One of the hardest things for women and their families during this time is the emotional problem that can come along. Leading a woman to act or react in ways alien to their normal behavior patterns. Anger and depression are emotions commonly seen amongst menopausal women. It is so important to nurture yourself during this time. Spend time doing relaxing things. Make this a way of life. Treat yourself to massages, manicures, aromatherapy treatments, anything to help you feel good.

Women's Health - What about Early Menopause?

Early menopause and/or premature menopause are terms that are often used interchangeably -- and are often used as umbrella terms to cover many different situations and conditions -- from premature ovarian failure to surgical menopause to menopause caused by chemotherapy or radiation.

The link between them all is age: To put it as simply as possible, early or premature menopause is typically used to mean menopause that comes well before the average age of normal menopause -- when you're still in your 20s, 30s, or early 40s. More technically, as used by many doctors and medical journals: Early menopause refers to the total cessation of your periods for 12 months -- before the age of 45.

Some other causes of amennorhea (stopped periods) include:

Excessive weight gain or weight loss, Use of certain drugs-such psychiatric drugs and narcotics, excessive exercise, Recent use of birth control pills-it's not uncommon to stop getting periods for up to six months after discontinuing the pill, Uterine adhesions -usually due to infection or d&c procedures.

Whatever the technical term that's used and whatever the cause, early menopause means one simple thing: your reproductive system is no longer working the way it used to.....and it's happening at an age when you didn't expect it to be happening. Women who have put off having children they always wanted, may feel betrayed when menopause comes too early.

Women who have skipped periods for over a year do meet the diagnosis of menopause. When they are under 40 that makes their menopause too early ("early menopause"). However, menopause is a normal part of the hormonal lives for all women. For some menopause just came about 10 to 12 years too soon.

Women with early menopause are often cut short on their normal life cycle exposure to estrogen and progesterone. It does become important then to do a saliva test to determine the estradiol and progesterone levels after menopause. It may be important to balance the deficient hormones with bio-identical estrogen and progesterone therapy until you reach age 52. This should always be monitored with saliva testing and by your physician.

You should have a bone density test because one of the risks of early menopause is osteoporosis. Balancing estrogen and progesterone along with a healthy active lifestyle will help prevent this damaging disease.

Be encouraged, you have successfully survived perimenopause (which is very rough for many) and graduated into menopause a bit too early. That doesn't change who you are as a woman and a person. While your hormones are adjusting there may still be ups and downs but eventually you'll feel well again, and probably better than you have for at least five years as you enter the next wonderful season of your life!

Early Menopause

Early or premature menopause is defined as menopause before the age of 40. Premature ovarian failure, surgery, and chemotherapy may all result in early menopause. About one in a hundred women may experience early menopause; some may be teenagers or in their twenties. Symptoms of early menopause tend to be very similar to those of normal menopause. Changes in the timing and duration of menstrual periods and hot flashes are common.

In some women, early menopause may be due to failure of the ovaries and is called premature ovarian failure. It is thought that such failure is due to hormonal, autoimmune or genetic processes, which result in a depletion in the number of viable eggs in a woman�s ovaries. This depletion may be complete, or, in approximately ten percent of women who have premature ovarian failure, partial. These women have a reduced but possible chance of becoming pregnant. Recent research has shown that female twins may be up to four times more times more likely than other women to undergo spontaneous early menopause. Either or both twins may be affected.

Surgery is another cause of early menopause. When the ovaries are removed or damaged during surgery, there is a rapid reduction in estrogen and progesterone levels and the immediate onset of menopause. Because the hormonal changes are so abrupt, menopausal symptoms tend to be more intense.

Women who undergo chemotherapy for cancer treatment may have premature menopause. Cancer-killing drugs may damage other tissues too, including ovarian tissue. Tamoxifen, a drug prescribed in certain types of breast cancer, has an anti-estrogen effect and can also trigger early menopause. Sometimes, chemotherapy-induced menopause may be temporary.

Early menopause can be extremely distressing, particularly when it occurs in younger women who may not yet have had children or completed their families. Besides treatment of menopause symptoms, some women benefit from counseling to address emotional issues.

Breast enlargement is, no doubt, one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. However, many women wonder if the breast augmentation procedure is worth it, especially on a long run. Some fear that the breast implants will not last and they will begin to leak. Although this does happen, it is a very rare phenomenon. Most women who have gone through breast enlargement surgery didn�t experience any problems with their silicone breast implants.

Replacing breast implants

You will never have to replace your breast implants unless you come across a problem with them. Most breast implant replacements are made because the patient wants a new shape or size for her breasts. Although leakage and asymmetry are also among the reasons, they are very rare when compared with the conscious requests of the patients to modify their breast implants.

Incision types � which one is the best

While the inframammary incision is the most popular, other types of breast enlargement incisions should be considered. The crease incision has the huge advantage of leaving a minute scar that is barely noticeable. A transaxillary breast incision gives surgeons less control on where to implant the silicone. Incisions around the areola heal faster, but the abundance of nerve endings in the area made many surgeons feel that changes in tactile sensations might be present.

What Causes Hair Loss In Women

Hair loss is a problem that we usually attribute to middle aged males. What is not as apparent is that women also suffer from this problem. We just do not see it as most women will cover it up with a wig, weaves, etc. Once it has started it is important to find the cause and reverse it, if possible, before it leads to unsightly balding and permanent loss. Many manifestations of hair loss in women can actually be reversed if caught early enough.

Tight weaves, hairdos, and the wearing of hats can all result in loss of hair called tension or traction alopecia. According to the American Hair Loss Council:

Traction alopecia is hair loss caused by physical stress and tension on the hair such as prolonged use of hair weaving, corn rows etc. Done too tightly on weak hair these can cause permanent loss of hair.

Anything that over tightens, constrains, or over burdens our hair and follicles can easily cause hair loss. The wearing of tight hats can also cause this condition. Many males have received receding and uneven hairlines from wearing tight hats. As a rule, do not do anything that unduly puts tension or strain on your hair.

Menstration and normal female hormonal changes can lead to loss of hair. This is referred to as telogen effiuvium or temporary hair loss. This can be caused by over exertion, stress both physical and emotional, thyroid problems and medicinal side effects. Many medicines have varying degrees in loss of hair as a side effect. Even many common medicines we would not normally link to this hair condition. This is why it is important to see your doctor if you suspect any thinning or loss of hair. Your doctor will ask for a history of all medicines taken and search for related possible side effects. It is normal for women to have some thinning of the hair during their menstruation cycle, from taking anti pregnancy pills, and upon reaching menopause. There are medicines your doctor can prescribe which can help with these causes.

The technical term for hair loss is androgenetic alopecia which imparts both hormonal and genetic attributes. Basically, many cases in women are similar to mens cases, with too much testosterone. Over production of testosterone or lack of synthesis of it can result in it being turned into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) at the follicle which will slowly kill the follicle. This over time results in balding patterns and loss of hair. There are hair treatments which treat and reduce the accumulation of DHT in the follicle, but more research into stopping the conversion of testosterone into DHT needs to be done.

There are other causes like chemotherapy, autoimmune disorders, scalp yeast infections, etc. Many of these are temporary and will go away, some require treatment so further hair loss and possible balding can be stopped. The best advice is to see your doctor early so they can properly diagnose the cause and treat it. effectively.

Working Women in the 21st Century - The Great Balancing Act

For more than 40 years, more and more women are working full time jobs and raising families. We are mothers, wives, sisters, daughters and friends. We do our best to have �it� all.

But at what cost?

Now, more than ever before, we must pay attention to the quality of our lives.
Being better, faster, smarter is not a healthy, balanced way to live.

Think about this:

If you were to monitor one weekday in your life, what would it look like?

Would this sound familiar?

Wake up, take a shower, make breakfast, pack lunches, get dressed, get the kids out the door, and, if you�re lucky, get yourself to work with matching socks.
You get to work, make decisions all day, and at the end of the day it�s time to pick up the kids at school, figure out dinner, make dinner, help with homework, get the kids in the bath do the dishes, maybe a load of laundry in between, and get the kids to bed.

You and your spouse share a wilted smile and connect if you still have any energy. Or maybe you grab a book and retreat to your bedroom.

Even if you don�t have children, chances are you�re still trying to cram too much �doing� into every day. Life is so much more than a list of things to do.

Are you making anytime for YOU or are you a borderline martyr?

Could you change your thinking to realize it�s okay to take some time for yourself? Allowing yourself an hour to go for a walk, get a pedicure or take a nap is alright. Not only is it okay, it�s actually necessary in order to be able to fully function in the other areas of your life.

I have a friend who is a working mother. She often complains that she never has time for herself. Yet when family and friends offer to give her a break, she declines. The excuse is she really can't be away from the kids or needs to complete some other chores etc. She�s become her own worst enemy.

We all can benefit from having a little part of the world carved out just for us.

We are so busy that we are not even present in our daily lives. Look at how many people are talking incessantly on cell phones, sitting in front of computers, hustling through drive-through coffee shops and flying from one task to another. When was the last time you noticed the color of the person�s eyes that served you your last meal or handed over your dry cleaning? Bumping around getting one task done after another is NOT LIVING.

Ask yourself these questions:

Are you giving the best of yourself and all of your energy to your career and your boss?

At the end of the day, do you have anything left in your tank for you and your family?

Are you present in your daily life?

These are powerful questions to open the door to your reality.

Here are a few suggestions to get yourself back on center.

1. Create Joy - Find 10 things that make you happy every day. These things don�t need to rock your world.
Happiness can be found in: The sunrise, your children laughing, kindness, taste, touch, smell, etc.

2. Be Quiet - Schedule time each day to be peaceful. Being still for even 15 minutes can make a difference in your life.

3. Get Up and Move � Take a walk with your family, go to the gym at lunch, move your body in some way each day.

4. Spoil Yourself - Plan to treat yourself to a special extravagance once each month.
This could be dinner and a movie, a massage, a weekend getaway, a chance to sleep in.

5. Make time for your family - Create traditions, eat supper together, play together, take time to listen and learn about the people you love the most.

You can start living an authentic, balanced life today. Become aware of the areas in your life that may need a tune up. Creating and finding balance is a life long process. Why not start examining your life today? After all, your life is not a dress rehearsal.

Menopause is a time of rapid growth if you let it be. It�s a natural time of transition that can open up life to a whole new dimension. What will it be for you? Hot flashes at first sight seem an uncomfortable, obnoxious, embarrassing event that occurs all too frequently, signaling a time of change that most of us aren�t ready for or willing to participate in. Or, meditate and develop awareness of your oft-neglected body. What does it tell you? Getting up and writing is a sure way to access your inner, neglected self. These doings, at first, reveal a glimpse of the woman to be. As they continue, the processes journey through your heart and soul divulging secrets long-held. Are you up to the challenge?
